Song.dugDug Song, the founder and CEO of Duo Security based in Ann Arbor, has been named the Leader & Innovator of the Year by Lawrence Technological University and WWJ Newsradio 950.

The award was announced at a May 15 reception at Lawrence Tech. Song was chosen from nearly 50 nominees profiled during the past 12 months in the WWJ Newsradio 950 Technology Report. read more

Over Seventy teams from 10 states and eight other countries will compete in the 15th annual Robofest World Championships on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Don Ridler Field House, Lawrence Technological University, 21000 West 10 Mile Road, Southfield.  Admission and parking are free for this event.

Robofest is a competition of autonomous robots – computer-programmed to act independently and not remote-controlled – that encourages students to have fun while learning principles of science, technology, engineering, and math, known as the STEM subjects. Teams compete in the junior division (grades 5-8) or senior division (grades 9-12) using a variety of computer programming languages. read more

Skillman Foundation President and CEO Tonya Allen will discuss ways to improve the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations in “When Good in Not Good Enough” on Tuesday, May 20, at 8:30 a.m. at Lawrence Technological University, 21000 West 10 Mile Road, Southfield.

Allen is the fourth speaker in the Executive to Executive series hosted by the Center for Nonprofit Management at LTU and sponsored by Plante Moran. The cost is $30. Register online at ltu.edu/nonprofit or at the event starting at 8 a.m. outside the Marburger Auditorium in LTU’s Science Building.

Allen will discuss why the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors must anchor their work in innovation and offer new tools that will broaden the mosaic of solution sets for social problems. Her talk will cover data and analytics, market-based principles, creative capital and democratic engagement in problem solving. read more

Two female executives with degrees in electrical engineering, both from Northville, will receive Lawrence Technological University’s Alumni Achievement Award at commencement exercises on Saturday, May 10.

LLTU will hold indoor ceremonies at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac for its 82nd commencement. The university is awarding more than 850 degrees for this academic year. read more

Lawrence Technological University has been named the national organizer for the United States for the World Robot Olympiad Association(WRO-USA), which runs a global LEGO robotics competition that draws participants from around the world.

The Olympiad started in Singapore in 2004. This year over 17,000 teams are participating. Each country has its own competition, and the winning teams from each country are invited to attend the World Robot Olympiad to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals.  read more

New family festival and running event to be held on Lawrence Tech’s campus at sunset on longest day of year

Southfield Summer Soulstice, a new family festival and running event, has been announced for June 21. The event will take place at sunset on the Lawrence Technological University (LTU) campus. Southfield Summer Soulstice will offer participants 5K and 10K runs, which are available to all ages and abilities. Runners will be encouraged to stay after the run to enjoy the longest day of the year with their friends and families that are there to cheer them on. The event also offers a one mile family sunset stroll, music stage, Yoga Soul, kids’ activities, a Michigan craft beer tent, food trucks and much more, until 11p.m. read more

Lawrence Technological University has received a three-year $697,000 grant from the Wisconsin-based Kern Family Foundation to support further expansion of entrepreneurial-minded learning in the curricula for undergraduate engineering students.

This is the final phase of a series of grants adding up to over $2.4 million from the Kern Family Foundation that began in 2003. The goal is to incorporate the entrepreneurial mindset into undergraduate engineering education at LTU. read more
