Durr Systems, a Germany-based engineering company, will invest $40 million in its new home in Southfield, consolidating operations from Auburn Hills, Plymouth, and Wixom into a single location.

The move to a former DTE call center on Northwestern Highway, likely to occur in early 2016, will create 320 jobs while retaining 180 jobs. The company plans to spend $21 million on building renovations and $19 million for an expansion. read more

SF groupMIC Customs Solutions, headquartered in Southfield’s Travelers Towers, are renewing their lease for several more years and moving into a larger space within the building.

The new space will have a kitchen, an additional office and conference room. Currently the company is located on the 11th floor. The move will be to the 12th floor, increasing square footage by 1,000 feet. read more

$5 million bequest to fund Lawrence Tech engineering scholarships

A bequest that exceeds $5 million will be used to fund full scholarships for engineering students at Lawrence Technological University.

The money comes from a trust established by George and Dorothea G. Mink of Clinton Township. Mrs. Mink died in May 2013, and her husband, a former student, died two months later. They had no children.

The engineering scholarships, funded with the income from the permanent endowment, will be awarded starting with the fall semester in 2016. read more

Those driving down the Lodge Freeway in recent weeks might have noticed a few changes to the roof of 1-800-LAW-FIRM.

Thanks to the privately funded Property Assessed Clean Energy project, or PACE, 1-800-LAW-FIRM, located at 26700 Lahser Road, recently debuted new wind turbines, carport and rooftop solar panels, high-efficiency lighting, and electric vehicle charging stations.

In 2012, the Southfield City Council voted to become the first city government to join Lean and Green Michigan, a public-private partnership facilitating economic development, the creation of good jobs and environment improvement.

Southfield’s membership allowed for the adoption of the citywide PACE program, which enables property owners to take on voluntary special assessments in order to finance improvements or construction projects that reduce energy and water use or utilize renewable energy sources, such as geothermal, solar and wind power. read more

The online graduate school guide Best Master’s Programs has ranked Lawrence Technological University 18th in the top 50 nationwide for online master’s degrees in engineering.

The rankings, which can be viewed at www.bestmastersprograms.org, are based on an equal weight of program quality, as measured by U.S. News & World Report, and estimated program cost.

“Savvy prospective graduate students want to know where to go to get the best bang for their buck, and this ranking effectively evaluates which engineering schools are doing the best job of balancing cost and quality,” said Michelle Rindy, who helped put together the ranking. read more
