Southfield businesses will soon come together for a Relay For Life event, which celebrate cancer survivors and honor those who lost their battle with the disease. The Southfield Corporate Relay will be held at Lawrence Tech University on September 10 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Relay For Life is open for anyone to participate. Its goal is to increase awareness about cancer and raise money to support American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives by helping people get well, stay well and actively fight back against the disease.

The funds also support ongoing research to find a cure for cancer. Since the American Cancer Society’s research program was started, more than $3.4 billion has been awarded to cancer researchers across the nation, including 44 who have gone on to win the Nobel Prize.

In 2013, Southfield held its first corporate Relay For Life event, which had over 50 attendees and raised more than $23,000, exceeding the initial goal by more than $3,000. Line dancing, necklace making, a dunk tank and a survivor’s ceremony were a few of the many activities available for attendees. The events are fun and competitive, and the American Cancer Society hopes to exceed its 2013 level of participation by involving even more businesses and members of the community.
